Wall Street is an eight-block-long street in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan in New York City. It runs between Broadway in the west to South Street and the East River in the east. The term "Wall Street" has become a metonym for the financial markets of the United States as a whole, the American financial services industry, New York–based financial interests, or the Financial District itself. The name of this street dates back to the seventeenth century, when it was the northern boundary of New Amsterdam. In 1652, the Dutch built a wall, which was later torn down by the British in 1699, to defend themselves from possible incursions. Although the wall is no longer there, the name has lived on.

You'll see the New York Stock Exchange, the New York Mercantile Exchange, and the New York Board of Trade all located on this street. Before the September 11 attacks, it was possible to visit the Stock Exchange and witness the lively atmosphere from the top level of the building. Nowadays, it is no longer open to tourists.

Capitol Hill, the largest residential district in the District of Columbia, was chosen as the site of America's first Congress House by Pierre L'Enfant in 1791. The U.S. Capitol was built atop Jenkins' Hill, now often referred to as "Capitol Hill," in 1793. Since then many additional buildings have been constructed around this site to serve Congress and the Supreme Court. In accordance with the "Residence Act" passed by Congress in 1790, President Washington in 1791 selected the area that is now the District of Columbia to serve as the nation's capital. As the country grew so did Capitol Hill, with the construction of buildings housing the Congress, Supreme Court, Library of Congress and Botanic Garden.
